NATIONAL DIABETES MONTH-NOVEMBER

November begins National Diabetes Month! A time to recognize and create a greater awareness about the challenges, research, educational information and management tools for children, adults and families who deal with the challenges of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

In regard to my commitment to diabetes research and education, the "Blue Brain" serendipity continues in my life.  our dear friend, Robert Washlow, graciously referred me to Elizabeth Turley, Assistant Dean for Institutional Advancement, Chicago-Kent College of Law. I called Lisa and we discussed the possibilities of working together on a diabetes project.

Last May, Robert called to tell me about about Chicago-Kent's partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology's Center for Diabetes Research and Policy. He knew Joshua (our son who has Type 1 diabetes and is an attorney) and I would be interested in the partnership, which has evolved with the support from Professor Ed Kraus, the associate professor of clinical practice at Chicago-Kent.

Professor Kraus coordinates a advocacy component to the college's diabetes work. The program offers needed legal advice, representation and advocacy for families dealing with school issue concerning their children and diabetes management in the classroom and reasonable accommodations to ensure their children's safety and protection and their right to a nondiscriminatory learning environment.

Here's another connection... My father (who had Type 2 diabetes) graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1924. At that time IIT was called Armour Institute of Technology. My father was the founder Lab-Line Instruments, a company that manufactured laboratory equipment for hospital and university research labs. I'm confident my father would have also described this unique educational and research partnership as remarkable and encouraging.

Lisa also sent me two timely diabetes related links after our conversation. One was in USA Today that quoted Professor Kraus and discussed all of the diabetes issues we discussed; and the other was an article that appeared in the Chicago Tribune on October 28, which high-lighted IIT’s works.

"Congratulations" and "Thank You" to everyone
who works to keep our children safe in school
and find a cure for diabetes!
