Confusing Communication Styles in Your Romantic Relationship

This morning, I had a most enjoyable Brain Color Interview with Matt West at KJFF-AM radio. The interview was taped and will air tomorrow morning March 10th. Listen in at 10:35 am CST.

Matt brought up the issue of husbands and wives and how they relate and communicate with one anther. I explained that often we are romantically drawn to our partner because we admire their personality traits and talents that we do not have or we would like to have. I offered Matt and his listeners my “AAA” solution to amorous dilemmas that dampen successful relationships:
1. Recognize what “Attracted” you to each other.
2. Understand why different idiosyncrasies have become an “Annoyance.”
3. “Accept” your loved one for who they are and what they value, even if their ideas differ from yours.

Matt shared that his wife often says, "Stop solving the problem and just listen!"
He told me that his instinct is to solve the problem.

I explained that her "Blue Brain" just wants him to listen and his "Green Brain" wants to find a solution to her problem."

After the interview, I chatting with a friend who told me that her husband was driving her crazy. His decision making style makes her feel like she is strapped into the lead car on a high speed roller coast ride.

She speaks "Fluent Brain Color" and told me that his "Yellow Brain" tells her what she should do and then a few weeks later his "Orange Brain" tells her not to worry or pay attention to what he preciously said. We both agreed that she is aggravated by his communication style, which I describe as "Color-filled Confusion"!

A Colorful Awards at the Oscars

I have never been a big fan of movies. I prefer to read a book or my friend, Penelope's remarkable movie review blog.

However, I do have favorite movies.
Most of them from classics from the 1940's staring
Claudette Colbert, Georg Raft, Lauren Bacall and Bogie.

My favorite movie, the Wizard of Oz, was produced in 1939.

However, last night, my husband and I decided to relax and watch the Academy Awards.

Wow, was I pleasantly were my "Blue Brain" surprised!!

I enjoyed the:

"Yellow Brain" well organized production.

"Blue Brain" creativity of the set and performances.

"Green Brain" information about each award category and all the nominees.

"Orange Brain" humorous hosting by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Most of all was thrilled with the 1940's glamor and good taste of most of the women in attendance.The dresses were elegantly designed with luxurious fabrics and the jewelry was classically understated.

Congratulations and thanks for a delightful evening!

Your Favorite Brain Color Candy

I was wondering if our Brain Color influences how we select our favorite candy?

The idea popped into my "Blue Brain" because I was thinking about my father, who was "Green Brain" mechanical engineer. His favorite candy was the Whitman's Sampler. He really didn't have sweet tooth for candy. However, when bought a box for my mother he always purchased a Whitman's Sampler, because it had a “map” naming each type of chocolate in the box.

That made perfect sense to a "Green Brainer" and was a smart thing to do!

Do "Yellow Brainers" like a standard favorite like... Marshall Field's Frango Mints?

Do the "Blue Brainers" enjoy making their own... yummy home made fudge?

Do the "Orange Brainers" love eating Jelly Bellies because of the variety of colors and fun flavors?

This is not scientific study, just a sweet one!

A Critique or A Criticism When You Write or Speak

Last night, I sent out my second "Brain Buzz" email newsletter. This time the learning curve was not as steep as last month.

I was challenged by the Brain Color "Stress Less" Clues section. For some reason the paragraphs would not line up correctly. I had printed the entire newsletter in a document for my "Green Brain" husband to proofread. However, unbeknown to me, when I place the information inside the new box in the newsletter the edited words reverted, and mistakenly I did not go back and spell check it.

The newsletter was ready and I set the deliver a 12:10am.

One of my first email his morning was from an individual who wrote:

"It would be good if you better proof-read your news letter.....I'm green--- not yellow--- the mistakes are disruptive, anyway...."

My thoughts: Yes, you are "Forest Green"!

The "Blue Brain" reply I sent the writer:
"Thank you for your attention. I had a problem with the email and when I copied and pasted the information I forgot to check the spelling again. My mistake. I appreciate your comment and my “Blue Brain” apologize for the mistakes that you found disruptive. I will be more accurate and careful to proofread my newsletter better next month."

I never received a reply and I didn't expect one. Once a "Green Brainer" says what they need to say they are finished. For example, when they complete a phone conversation they just hang up, and you might find yourself holding the receiver waiting for their salutation.

However, my "Chartreuse Brain" (Yellow/Green Brain) could not resist editing her message:
"better proof-read" was awkward and proofread is not hyphenated, and "news letter" is one word.

Later this morning, I received another message about my errors.
"My 'green brain' was just reviewing your attachment below, and I was wondering who is doing your proofreading/copy editing? Spelling errors, typos, etc., are distracting to my 'green brain,' and of course, I had to say something" : )

I responded to the writer and told her the same story and thanked her for her thoughtful attention and consideration.

Her "Teal Brain" (Green/Blue) reply:
"LOL! It’s so great when somebody really understands where you are coming from!!!! I knew you would accept my comments in the spirit in which they were offered—just trying to help my friend!"

My reply:
"Yes, I understood your intent. It was very clear, besides correct. ;-) Thank you!"

Each message was written by a "Green Brainer". However, the first message was a criticism and the second was a critique.

When you speak to some one or write a message...

2010 Olympic Games and Brain Colors

My husband and I always look forward to the Winter and Summer Olympics. Now, that the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver are about to conclude, we will miss watching the all extraordinary athletes and athletic competitions.

Confession of a "Compulsive Brain Colorist"...I could not help myself from "Brain Color Coding" the athletes and events. Below are a small sampling:

Ron Santo a.k.a #10 turns 70 today!

If you are not a Chicago Cubs fan you may not know about Ron Santo, who is our legendary and beloved Chicago Cubs 3rd baseman.

Ron is hero to baseball fans and to the adults, children and families who deal with the challenges of diabetes.

Ron was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 18 years old. The JDRF Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes is held annually in the Chicagoland area and raises millions of dollars for diabetes research.

You can listen to Ron's Cubs commentary on WGN Radio 720, the Voice of the Chicago Cubs.

A Romantic Risky Love Story

Last November, my "Green & Blue Plaid" friend, Rita Emmett who a consummate speaker and author of The Procrastinator's Handbook and The Clutter-Busting Handbook sent me her monthly THE ANTICRASTINATION TIP SHEET. I loved the story Rita wrote about her son Robb and his wife Misha and asked if I could post it on my blog. Since, February is relationship Wellness Month I thought this was the perfect time to share it with my readers. I have also included the Rita's message about taking risks. Enjoy!

"Bruce & I are both in our second marriage and we have a “blended family” of 5 kids. Last night one of our four sons, Robb, surprised his wife Misha on their anniversary by renewing their wedding vows. He told her he was taking her to a restaurant, and instead blindfolded her, drove in zig-zags & circles to keep her confused, and brought her to their church.

We were all inside waiting for them. He walked her in, and removed her blindfold. Then in the church aisle, Robb --- who hates to be the center of attention & would never, ever want to be on a stage or in front of a crowd -- knelt down as if to propose and asked Misha if she would marry him again.

Our instructions were that if she says yes we should all cheer, and if she says no, we might as well get up and go home.

After the ceremony, we went to the church hall where we had chicken, pasta & salad, everyone brought homemade goodies for the sweet table and we all brought tons of soda. There were about 70 people and the more-than-twenty kids went to the far end and played basket ball, dodge ball and ran around in circles.

Misha said she’s always wanted to do this, but never had the time or energy to plan it. Yesterday, she had a dream come true -- the spiritual ceremony to publicly renew their commitment to each other; then was hostess to a fabulous party with their family and friends. She LOVED that he did it all and she did not have to lift a finger to put together this gala event.

Can you imagine all the things that could have gone wrong in this plan? Especially since all three of their kids got the flu two weeks earlier, and 4 days before, Robb had serious surgery to repair cartilage that had been ripped from the bone in his shoulder during an “incident” while on duty as a cop.

When I asked him if he thought all that pain might cause him to cancel Renewing their Vows, he replied if we let obstacles stop us, nobody would ever get anything done. He said if he had to be carried into the church, he was going to go up that aisle with Misha. He took a risk to pull off a romantic gift for his wife, and it worked beautifully.

She told him that for the whole next year, every time he messes up, he will be absolved because of last night.

Making a grand gesture to show your love means taking risks. And the biggest obstacle is fear. When I give a keynote or a seminar, I talk about the fears that can cause us to procrastinate. And I tell the audience that I don’t know how to make fear go away; there are some things we just have to do scared.

When people think of “doing something scared”, they usually think of activities – speaking in front of a group, going back to school, asking for a raise, interviewing for a job, starting a business, learning to tap dance.

But hearing family and friends talking together at the Renewal of Vows party, so many people commented on how they’d love to do something like this but would be scared of all that could go wrong. And it occurred to me that many people pass up the chance to enrich -- or start -- a relationship because of fear.
Fear of the person not responding the way they want.
Fear of the plan not working.
Fear that we might say the wrong words.
Fear of looking stupid or foolish.
Fear of being embarrassed or misunderstood.
Fear of not having total control of the situation.
Fear of … taking a risk.

Even the most courageous people can be paralyzed by fear when it comes to relationships. Have you ever skipped doing something for a relationship THAT YOU REALLY WANTED TO DO because you were shy or afraid to do it?
Like telling your parents that they are good parents?
Or visiting a friend who has cancer?
Or going over to introduce yourself to that new person on your block or at work?
Or asking someone you would like to get to know to join you for lunch or coffee?
Or calling up someone who is grieving over a death?
Or making some kind of commitment?
Or writing a note to someone who has helped you in your life?
Or doing something wildly and outrageously romantic for someone you love?

I used to think that courage was not feeling fear. But a friend who has three times served in Iraq told me that courage is “feeling terrified yet doing what you gotta do anyway."

So today, decide to take a risk and say, write or do something you’ve been meaning to do but kept making excuses. Decide to be courageous.

Your words might give your parents the best gift ever, or you might brighten someone’s day or might make a new friend. OR your spouse might give you “advanced forgiveness” for all the messing up you do during the next year just because you did something wildly, outrageously romantic."

Secret of A Woman's Age

Recently, I received thought-provoking message from my cousin, Audrey Lakin.

Blogging Sabbatical Finale

This morning my yard looked like Jack Frost had been up all night dusting my trees and painting my gardens with powdered sugar. What a lovely vision to finale to my Blogging (and Work) Sabbatical.

I must confess, I did take two breaks in my work sabbatical, when I was interviewed by radio hosts Scott Cluthe on February 18th and Michael Ray Dresser on February 22nd.

Upon returning to my desk I open my Outlook email Inbox, which resembled Santa Claus' toy bag. My "Yellow Brain" had been committed to not reading or writing emails for almost 2 weeks. Then I prepared for two more radio interviews. The first was live Larry Whitler and Robin MacBlane and the second was taped with Marsha Raye, which will air on March 3rd.

Since the interviews, I have worked on my What Color Is Your Brain? Fan Page (coming soon), arranged for a What Color Is Your Brain? book event the University of Chicago B & N College Bookstore on May 12th, spoke to my publicist, Lisa Schuble, about our PR campaign and began replying to emails and catching up, which will take a few days. I also had so many lovely responses to my new "Brain Buzz" newsletter and birthday wishes that my "Blue Brain" is still working on my "Thank You" messages.

I'm so happy I eased back into reality with my "Blogging Sabbitical Finale" at the Elgin Symphony, yesterday. Jordan and I enjoyed the Five By Design’s "Stay Tuned" concert that made us sing along with the radio songs and commercials of our childhood.

How To Be A Better Parent

Medicare for A Ground Hog

Today is a remarkable day...
1. Our grandson is celebrating is 1st birthday! Where has the year gone??
2. I am celebrating my 65th birthday. Where have the years gone??
3. I am officially eligible for Medicare.
4. Today is Ground Hog Day and Punxsutawney Phil, the celebrated ground hog saw his shadow. The forecast.. 6 more weeks of winter. No surprise, it's snowing today.
5. My first Email Newsletter went out today at 12:00am. I had promised myself that I would complete that goal by my birthday and I did!!

I have been overwhelmed responses to the newsletter and "Love"ly birthday messages from family, friends and colleagues.

Used Toothpicks for Dental Hygiene

Years ago, my mother began using The Doctor's BrushPicks to prevent gum disease. I found it rather odd because she was such an elegant and proper lady. I find it difficult to write about toothpicks and my mother in the same sentence. The words and image are an oxymoron.

However, the toothpicks are a lovingly referred to "Mimi Picks" by our family members and friends who are devoted to these little "plastic pastel plaque preventers".

Periodontist Sally Cram, DDS, a spokeswoman for the American Dental Association said, "There are a lot of studies that suggest that oral health, and gum disease in particular, are related to serious conditions like heart disease." Our dental hygienist is pleased with how healthy our gums and teeth are because of our "Mimi Picks".

I used to purchase the large 250 count containers at our local Walgreens Drug Store, However, they no longer sell them and stopped carry the small toothpick packages. The alternative was to find another pick, but I couldn't. My "Yellow Brain" loyalty is to a superb product, so I researched purchasing my supply online.

Childhood Obesity and Adult Weight Loss

I was impressed when I learned that First Lady, Michelle Obama has taken on childhood obesity as her focus for 2010.

However, I would really be really excited and encouraged if her focus also included an greater awareness and more education about the increase of children who are over weight and are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Today, while I was waiting for my chiropractic adjustment at Dr. Randy Horning's office I noticed a shocking sign on the wall that halted my "Green Brain" processing, until read the sign aloud...

"For every 10 pounds you are over weight.
you add 40 pounds of pressure to your joints."

That's a huge amount of pressure. I also learned the 68% of Americans are over weight. Another reminder that obesity is linked to heat attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, depression, cardiovascular disease and, of course,Type 2 diabetes.

This also got me thinking about the medical device exhibitors I met when I presented my Brain Color Workshops at the AOHP national conference last September. EZ Way, Inc., Dane Technologies, Inc. and PHS West, Inc. all manufacture devices to keep health care workers and over weight patients safe.

Weight loss is a call to action for Americans to encourage the people we care about to lower the numbers on the scale, which will lower health risks, medical cost and insurance premiums!

Let's tip the scale towards better health for children and adults!

Today, my friend, Danielle, sent me a link to a YouTube video. I always watch or read what Danielle send me. She is a "Green Brainer" and researches her information before sending it to others.

After I watched that video I saw another video on the side of the page entitled "Breakthrough Diabetes Research from Israel." I immediate clicked on the link to learn about this encouraging research.

A Glazov Returns to Russia via Pravda

Today, I opened a Google News Alert and discovered a stunning surprise!

I clicked on the link and found an article entitled "Colour Theory May Help Parents to Understand Child Behaviour." The article had been translated from the Portuguese version, which had appeared on the iG portal last week. The writer was Lisa Karpova,an independent journalist. Lisa also writes for Russiansentry Blog, which offers readers a fascinating perspective of world news.

Next to Lisa name I read PRAVDA.Ru the English version of Russian newspaper. My "Green Brain" could hardly process what I was reading. I had to read PRAVDA.Ru again to make sure I had read it correctly. Yes, it was Pravda the Russian News paper! To be absolutely sure I scrolled up the page until newspaper's logo appeared, then my excitement exploded!

I'm sure my maternal grandmother who was born in Zhytomyr; my maternal grandfather who was born in Petefka (no longer on the map); and my father-in-law, who was born Alexandrovsk, and who's last name pre-Ellis Island was Beloglazov (the same as Sergei and Anatoli, the famous twin brothers who were champion Olympic wrestlers) would all be shocked and delighted with this news. Just as I was.

I can just imagine my family members reading
the newspaper article and "Kvelling!"
(The Yiddish word for bursting with pride.)

Now, my family teases me and says,
"Were in the World is Sheila Glazov?,
instead of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?"

An Insult or Courtesy to Assist Senior Citizens

My husband and I shop at our local Costco to stock up our freezer and household pantry. Jordan usually organizes and packs the boxes. It's in his DNA. My father-in-law could have won an Olympic Gold Medal for packing suitcases, car trunks and organizing desks, closets and drawers. Papa Joe was a professional organizer before it was a popular profession.

The last time we were loading our carts at the check out a young man asked,
"Do you need any help?"

The time before that were in the parking lot loading our truck and a young woman asked, "Do you need any help?"

Each time we replied, "Thank you for asking, we are fine."
Each time they replied, "Are you sure?"
Each time we responded, "Yes, we are sure, thank you for asking!"

Last Saturday, I attended our granddaughter's ballet class. After our ballerina was settled, my daughter-in-law ushered me into a small waiting room. It was crowed with young mothers leaning against the walls or perched on a limited number of chairs.

Those who were seated sequentially asked me,
"Would you like to sit down?"
Each time I replied, "No thank you, I'm fine."
Each time they replied, "Are you sure?"
Each time I responded, "Yes, I'm sure, thank you for asking!"

Lately, my "Yellow Brain" has been wondering...
1. Is "I'll be 65 on February 2nd" written across my forehead?
2. Are Jordan and I finally looking "old"? People have always told us, "You're in such good shape, you don't look your age."
3. How lovely and refreshing... people are respectful and polite!
4. I don't feel like about to receive Medicare benefits.
5. I don't feel like a "Senior Citizen".
6. I don't feel that I need the assistance (lifting is an excellent preventative for osteoporosis).

I might be undergoing a transformation...
I may no be sensitive or shocked by people's comments,
I might be delighted that people are courteous and caring.
